Our History
APD was founded on the belief that engineering and architecture should serve communities with integrity and precision. Three decades later, that foundation remains unchanged.
• APD Engineering was established in Rochester, New York by Steve Cleason, who left a large corporate firm to create a more client-focused, technology-driven engineering practice.
• Initially specialized in civil engineering services and built strong local and national client relationships.
• Jamie Wheatcraft, former President, joined APD as the company’s first architect.
• Expanded service offerings to include architectural design, enhancing APD’s full-service capabilities.
• Architectural services became a major component of APD’s business.
• The company began providing national design support for major clients.
• APD became Monro Inc.’s National Prototype Consultant, supporting consistent development and design standards nationwide.
• APD was selected as ALDI’s National Prototype Architect, maintaining all national prototype designs.
• The company relocated headquarters to Victor, NY, expanding space and capabilities.
• Brent Powell, now a Principal and Board Member, joined APD as the Structural Lead, further broadening the firm’s in-house expertise.
• Founder Steve Cleason retired, and Jamie Wheatcraft became President.
• APD continued opening additional offices across the U.S. to meet increasing client demand and support national programs.
• Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering services added to provide fully integrated design solutions.
• Jamie Wheatcraft retired at the end of 2021, with Dan Sargent taking over the role of President in 2022.
• APD proudly welcomed its 100th employee, marking a major milestone in the firm’s continued growth and commitment to building a talented, collaborative team.
• APD remains employee-driven and client-focused, offering civil, structural, architectural, and MEP engineering nationwide.
• Continues to uphold its founding values of quality, efficiency, and strong client relationships that began in 1996.
